Suomenlinna aka: Sveaborg, Viapori

Aaah, you know: ferry swaying over the sea, an amazing view over Helsinki, wind gently blowing, sun shining… The ferries tend to be really crowded when the weather’s good, but of course you don’t really notice it on the island, because there’s plenty of Suomenlinna for everyone. And the nature is beautiful, but you have to go and experience it yourself.
The last time we just walked there, took some pictures, ate and sunbathed a bit. It’s a perfect place when you need a time-out. So, if you live in Helsinki you may consider yourself lucky :)

My parents were living here when I was born and Suomenlinna has always held a place in my heart since I first came back to visit it..

I wish they could have stayed or come back.. this would have been a great place to live as a kid.

Two words: Big-ass cannons!

The Suomenlinna Seafortress is on a couple of islands just outside Helsinki, so it will take a while going there and coming back. You’ll probably want to reserve more than two hours for the whole thing so I recommend that you plan eating there as well. There are a couple of restaurants there, but I recommend that you do a picnic instead. There are excellent spots to do this all over the islands, but a really good one is the southern end of Kustaanmiekka. And remember, DO NOT LITTER! Ok? ;-)
