Oh, Willie B
Noble Beast
Thou will always be remembered sweetly
For not throwing poo at me
I once brought a date to Zoo Atlanta and she was really quite dumb. She read the plaque and thought Willie B was an animal called a Williebee, though you could plainly see he was a gorilla. Hah.

I visited Zoo Atlanta just once in the year that I lived in the city. I wasn’t impressed. Maybe it was because they were re-renovating (This was back in 2002-2003) but all of the animals seemed genuinely miserable. It wasn’t that great, wasn’t very clean, and wasn’t nearly as good as many of the other zoos I’ve been to.

I love the zoo! My grandmother used to live near Grant Park, so we visited often when it was still The Atlanta Zoo. I remember seeing Willy B playing, sometimes watching the Atlanta Hawks. We always visited when my aunt came from Ohio, and I visited with Girl Scouts many times, and would have my photo taken in front of Daisy the giraffe’s enclosure.
Of course, Daisy died when I was a kid, and Willy B died a few years ago. But the zoo is better than it ever was! The habitats are much more natural, and there are more animals than ever.
And if you go, be sure to have your picture taken with the statue of Willy B.

I think all the animals were asleep. Either that or they didn’t have many…but that was back in 1990 or so. It may be a better zoo now, but I’ve been to greater and cleaner ones than Atlanta Zoo.

I was here last month but want to go again. Why? Giant panda Lun Lun gave birth to a baby panda on Sep. 6. We’ll be back in Atlanta at the end of January. I hope Lun Lun and the baby are back on exhibit by then.
