Schloss Neuschwanstein aka: Neuschwanstein Castle

Pay for the horse drawn carriage ride up from the Visitor Center to the Castle. Walk back downhill.

Bring lots and lots of film.

You aren’t allowed to take pictures inside of the castle, in order to protect the paintings and such.

I was living in Stuttgart, W. Germany in 1983 with my husband who was stationed there. I grabbed the opportunities to take all the tours I could to castles in the area. This visit was my favorite.
I was only disappointed with the magnitude of the place and how little of the interior you get to see on the tour. But what you do see is amazing! The paintings on all the walls are magnificent! Made especially more appreciative if you first read their english website tour and understand all the stories and legends that insired the work. And, being a big fan of Wagner opera, as His Majesty was, I love that he was so insired to include them in his everyday life.
It is truly one of the most spectacular places in the world, for the scope and size of such a building on the top of a very high mountain.
Any trip to the Baverian Alps must include a visit there.

King Ludwig II’s grip on reality must have been tenuous (at the least) once the construction of Neuschwanstein was ordered. The castle, which was never fully finished has enough clues from the legends of Tannhäuser, Parsifal and Tristan and Isolde in it’s decoration to show the mythical world that he wanted to inhabit.

In the end his death, which was never fully explained, and the bankruptcy of the monarchy put an end to this fairytale dream.

Today it is a steep walk (or ride in a buggy) up to the castle and a glimpse back into a troubled mind.

Wow. I made a visit to the castle this past summer of 2006. I will probably never forget the castle. There was a lot of interesting facts that I learned about King Ludwig (The Mad King). This is also the model castle for the Cinderella Castle. No photography was allowed inside, but I did buy a book about the castle which has a lot of wonderful pictures. The inside is insanely ornate and beautiful. You would never dream up the rooms that are in this castle. If you ever get the chance to go be sure to tour the inside and take a close look at his bed. It is magnificently carved. I have never seen anything of the sort.

Very relaxing

Schloss Neuschwanstein überraschte unbedingt! Es hat fast sureal geschienen. Der üppige grüne Wald, der es umgeben hat, war völlig majestätisch. Die Bayern haben geschienen, uns Amerikaner ebenso zu befreunden. Ich habe tatsächlich gesehen, dass ein Mann mit einem Cowboyhut und riesiges Band anschnallt, und habe angenommen, dass er ein Texas ist, bis ich gehört habe, dass ihn spricht. Die Burg ist so schön es ist unbeschreiblich.
