Old Faithful Geyser

Semi Faithful but beautiful

The geysur was about seven minutes late.Little spurts of water from the plume had the tourist crowd pleased. My boyfriend and I a joked about it being semi faithful because it was late, however when it erupted it was spectacular,it gave me goosebumps, definitely one to put on your bucket list.

Old Faithful Geyser

A bit of confusion at first

You walk up to this little spurting geyser and you wonder “this is old faithful?”. I was fortunate to stick around for only 5 minutes (some people wait for an hour), and then the geyser suddenly shot straight up into the air after a little bit of gurgling. I can imagine I would’ve been disappointed if I’d had to wait for an hour to see it, but it was really cool! A lot of people walked away before it happened, possibly wondering what I had mentioned in the first sentence..

Funny

The geyser is not that impressive, but the huge crowds of people are, especially the funny things they say while they’re waiting for it to start.

One thing I really remember about Old Faithful was all the different languages. You can hear just about every language there is all around you, all the time. And looking at all the different license plates is kind of cool, too.

The first time I went to this place

This was part of month to two month trip I took as a kid. It was a great experience!

Way overrated

It’s one of those things you have to do, and you’ll do it, but the real star of the show is Old Faithful Lodge, an astonishing piece of architecture out in the wilds. Or at least as wild as the park can be.

The geyser phenomenon is really a place to watch crowds, and to reflect on why people would wait in a huge crowd to see a geyser go off.

A tip I have about this place

i worked at the old faithful inn for three months, and only actually sat and watched old faithful go off three times. once was by moonlight from observation point, a good zigzagging hike up the side of a mountain that gives a view of the whole basin, once because i happened to be passing by when it started going, and once from the balcony of the inn. as much as the geyser itself is amazing, the true spectacle is the hordes of people who show up with only old faithful in mind, the gasps and cheers as it begins to spurt.

the biggest hint, though: don’t try to get into any of the restraunts right after it goes. it’s called the geyser rush, and you’ll wait a very long time for very stressed service.
