How Times Change

Victoria was the final stop on our Alaskan cruise. Victoria has special significance to Mrs. viii and myself. This is where we spent our honeymoon many years ago.

It is still a beautiful city. The Inner Harbour area is so beautiful with the Empress Hotel, the House of Parliament, and all of the hanging flower baskets.

But sadly it has changed. When we first visited Victoria together it was a beautiful, elegant, sophisticated sort of a city. When we visited this last time it was still beautiful, but the atmosphere had changed from sophistication to being more like a carnival.

It was very crowded at the Inner Harbour and in the nearby parts of downtown. That could possibly be in part to a huge influx of people like me, who were just there for a few hours while their cruise ship was in port.

Anyway, it’s still a very pretty place, I think that it might be better to see it during a less busy time of the year perhaps.

A review of this place

I’ve lived in both Vancouver and Victoria before and I prefer Victoria by a long shot. Vancouver is bigger, busier and more congested while Victoria has the same spectacular scenery with a more relaxed pace and cleaner streets. The town I live in now, up-island from Victoria is more of a retirement community, but Victoria, with its University and colleges has a lot more young people. Good restaurants, music and night clubs, great shopping and tons of outdoor recreation opportunities. And the rest of the Island is only minutes away.

I tried to move to this city as one of those “this’ll turn the life around” trips. I ended up living with a lesbian who seemed to have a round the clock turnover of women and in turn i move out within 2 weeks.

The city itself is fab though!

I spent a week in Victoria staying with relatives. I spent the week sleeping on a couch after driving all the way there from Calgary with my family but it was worth it. I enojyed the fact it is more like a small town, and it was very clean. Going down to the water was the best part.

A review of this place: Empress is overpriced, lots of attractions

This is a gorgeous place to visit. Ferry from Seattle takes 3 hours (sometimes a bumpy ride – get your seasickness medicine ready) There are tons of attractions in the downtown and habour area. Renting a scooter is a good idea to see places around and it’s fun! You can honk at other fellow scooter riders on the way :)
In the night time check musicians on harbour. I assume you’ll visit Butchart gardens it’s a must!

A review of this place: Victoria - February 2007

Went there for work and spent only 2 days. But it was just as beautiful as I had always been led to believe. Very much of a west-coast, laid back vibe. But then there’s the English country garden thing overlaid on that.

The gigantic trees have been faling down, with the big winds. It was sad to see so.
I loved the ocean, in winter. Pacific ocean is so cool.

Why I want to go to this place

I know I want to see Vancouver, but all my friends who have been there say, “Oh, go to Victoria instead!” I don’t know exactly why I would pick Victoria over Vancouver, but what I need to do is to check them both out and see for myself.
