I don’t go to waterfire for the waterfire- it’s much to crowded! I go for the music and dancing! Every couple of weeks they have a free ballroom dance lesson under the stars. It’s a lot of fun.

The way people were talking about this, I thought it would be more than a few metal bowls on fire and some fire spinners. It’s good for a few minutes or in passing, but it’s not that great.

It is a tiring place. There are way too many people. It is always so crowded. It is because of that I feel it is not worth visiting. But if you don’t mind crowds, go for it.

I had the pleasure of watching an impossibly old man finger his similarly old companion under the bridge bathed in the “romantic” glow of carcinogenic bliss while consumed by a soundtrack curated by the bastard child of Enya and Celine Dion. Kill me!

My favorite thing about Rhode Island in the summer… aside from laying on the beach all day! A perfect summer evening is walking along the river during Waterfire late at night as the crowds are dying down..

Waterfire is a really beautiful place to visit if you happen to be in Providence while it’s going on.
Taken from www.waterfire.org:
the award-winning sculpture by Barnaby Evans installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence, has been praised by Rhode Island residents and international visitors alike as a powerful work of art and a moving symbol of Providence’s renaissance. WaterFire’s sparkling bonfires, the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the flickering firelight on the arched bridges, the silhouettes of the firetenders passing by the flames, the torch-lit vessels traveling down the river, and the enchanting music from across the world all engage the senses and emotions of those who stroll the paths and bridges of Waterplace Park. WaterFire has captured the imagination of many thousands of people, bringing life to downtown, and continues to revitalize Rhode Island’s capital city.

I had never heard of it but was visiting Providence and taken to it at the insustence of a friend. I felt I was witnessing something primeval, mythical… that these might well have been the boatmen of the River Styx.
