Why I recommend this place to visitors

Less tourists than Stonehenge, equally cool.

Worth One Visit Unless...

...you practice a religion with strong ties to this place. Avebury’s claim to fame is its standing stones, which are all set in a row in a weird pattern. Avebury is not far from Stonehenge, but it’s a little village, and much of the shop fare is geared toward people with interests in the countryside and/or ritualistic religions. But it’s very very interesting and very very old.

Avebury

I had a lovely day in Avebury in April 2005. It was absolutely fascinating. If you’re in the area then I definitely recommend a trip here. I found it far more interesting than Stonehenge and I hope to go back sometime soon.

Simply Amazing

Honestly, if more of the stones were still erect and there hadn’t been a town built in the middle of Avebury, this would blow Stonehenge away no questions asked. The stones are really breathtaking and the monstrous circular mound and moat that was built to surround them is astounding. I could spend a day here just gazing at the stones.

A wonderful place

I, too, enjoyed these stones more than Stonehenge, because we could walk around among them. I found it to be a beautiful place with a very good, spiritual energy. I found a jackdaw feather on the ground there, too. If you want to see standing stones, by all means drive by Stonehenge, but then come here and have a more “personal” experience.

A line of civilization from pre-history to now

Avebury is one of the most fascinating ancient sites in the UK. It’s popular with the tourist crowds and hippies, but it’s large enough not to feel crowded (even on mid-summer’s eve).

As a National Trust property there is a visitors centre and a museum (that I didn’t go in) and there is a pub right in the village in the circle.

I would much rather go to Avebury than Stonehenge, which is not all that far away.

Better than Stonehenge because you can touch the stones

I drove by Stonehenge and the line of people and the roping off of the actual stones kept me from going in. When we went to Avebury and you could actually touch the stones standing in a field with sheep around you it felt more authentic and the feeling was incredible.
