Summer memories

I learned to swim here as a child. We would take an old school bus from Sudbury and spend the entire day at the Pond. Legend has it that it is bottomless.

A tip I have about this place

To really enjoy Walden Pond, it’s important to get as far from the public beach as possible. If you follow the trail to the far side of the lake, there are lots of hidden beaches that are much more idyllic than the sandy, child-clogged beach with the lifeguards.

Read Thoreau then come here

Perhaps the most important pond in American history, Walden Pond is a metaphor as much as a reality…which has actually succumbed somewhat to modernity. It is still worth visiting, circumnavigating, splashing in, and reading more about.
It is amazingly close to Boston and Cambridge. 12 miles away, as I recall.

Don’t miss the other literary sites, graves, homes and such in the Concord/Lexington area.

Peaceful

An excellent place to go for a run and a swim afterwards. Some friends say that it gets too crowded in the summer, but I’m more amused than annoyed by the variety of people that go there. Furthermore, it’s unbeatable being in the middle of the pond when it’s sunny out.

Gorgeous

It looks beautiful at twilight. Makes for a beautiful walk around the pond also. I can definitely see how Thoreau was inspired by it’s beauty. I’ve actually written a few things there myself.

Read up first...

Walden is a state recreation area so there are people there swimming and canoeing sometimes, but it is often quiet and atmospheric—it wasnt deserted or wilderness when Henry D. was there either. You can walk all the way around on a flat path. It is quite pretty in the fall when the leave are changing.
Bring a small rock from home in your pocket and add it to the cache at the cabin site…

Walden Pond.

I went here on a class trip, and I had one of my favorite people with me. I’m glad, because otherwise nature would have taken its lonely toll on me. Go in the winter. Don’t fall in the pond.

I actually got here because it was near a clinic

that I had to visit. A clinic for ADS. When I heard it was close to Walden, I made it a point to go. This was with a very very special someone.

The place is magical, and yet very American. Thank you Emerson, thank you, Thoreau, thank you God.
