Boldt Castle

My husband and I were married at Boldt Castle in 2002 – Both of us traveled to the 1000 Islands when we were kids (separately, of course) and getting married there was a dream of mine when I was a little girl. I even got to get ready in the tower of the former “playhouse” on the property and then walk down the stone steps – one of my husband’s little cousins (a little girl) looked up in awe and said, “Wow, she’s a princess!” So sweet it makes your teeth hurt, right?! Seriously, though, the prices are very reasonable considering the grandeur we were surrounded by. (if only my husband would have kept his eyes on me instead of the super duper catamarans whizzing by…)

We came to the area not expecting much, it being a few weeks before the tourist time. We did the boat tour that ended at the castle. Wow. It was beautiful, and the history behind it is very touching. It was interesting to see how it was being restored and the process that it took. If you’re in the area, I’d make a point to stop here.

In short, Boldt Castle was built at the turn of the century by multi-millionaire George C. Boldt for his wife, Louise, as a testimony his love for her. However, this love story turns tragic when his wife passed away (there are rumours that she left him too). The castle was left unfinished because for whatever reason he dropped all work immediatly. The castle suffered vandalims and damage for years. However, it is now under restoration and is looking good. The cost of visiting the castle goes towards restoration. The plan is to make it what it was once meant to be! I have two relatives who work at this castle and both agree it’s haunted! Some very strange things have happened there. Definitely worth the visit and you can take in a tour of the 1,000 islands and hear all the history involved with that (bootleggers, love stories, etc).

If you’re already in the 1,000 Islands, check it out. I’ve been there a few times and I can tell you that it’s not that exciting. Perhaps if they did some restoration it might be a little more interesting.
