Montserrat

I was going to be in Antiqua on my birthday so I planned a trip with a couple friends to Montserrat—for the day! We took the ferry over (cheaper than the helicopter, but takes longer and if you are prone to seasickness this might not be an option). We had made arrangements for a driver to meet us in the harbor. He took us to pick up the minister of agriculture for the Island and with the two of them as guides we went hiking and were able to taste the fresh almonds from the trees. I have to recommend tasting the almonds! They make a lot of dishes with them and fresh almonds will spoil you.

We then visited the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. This was since the eruption (but before the most recent one).

Overall it was a really nice day. We took the helicopter back and that was a very nice way to go! I’d definitely recommend it at least one-way if you cannot do it round trip. The view of Antigua from the air is also beautiful as you return to Jolly Harbor.

Go to Caribbean Helicopters in Jolly Harbour on Antigua. They’ll give you a fantastic helicopter ride over the volcano on Monserrat.

Authentic caribbean island with none of the tourist crap! My husband and I own property here and the people are wonderful and friendly. It is not unusual to get a beach by yourself and the diving is spectacular!

On a sailing trip we stopped at Montserrat and had a great time on the island. Friendly people, beautiful nature and good food.
We visited the Great Alps waterfall and enjoyed the shower under the waterfall! A wonderful place.
Just a few months later this part of the island got destroyed by the volcano.

but still beautiful… the volcano has become something of a tourist attraction of its own as well…

I lived in Montserrat for a year in the 80’s – a good 10 years before the volcano. It was beautiful and perfect then, and still is in my memory, although many of the places I remember are buried under several feet of ash.

I’d love to go back someday. So many memories…
