Most of Insa-dong street may offer touristy souvenirs, but step into Ssamzie-gil market for something a little more hip, a little different. Walk up four floors (no stairs, only ramps) and have coffee at the cafe on the roofdeck—great dessert, has its own herb garden for fresh green (and herb) tea.

This place is “touristy” and nothing like the rest of the country. Still, it can be cool although tiring. I saw a pretty good outdoor show there once.

perhaps best compared as Seoul’s Greenwich Village.

A good place to stay if you’re only in Seoul for a few days. Close to the Palaces, tourist shopping etc. I stayed in Bwweon Guesthouse, which was a really nice, clean, friendly guesthouse… cheap too. Good for english, since there’s not so many places that speak english.

This is another one of my favorite areas. I especially like the tea house where the birds fly overhead as you sip your tea.

Do you want to taste the fusion of the tradition and the modern Korea? Then, Insadoing is the place. Good for shoppings, too. Many souvenir shops with the cheap price. Mixed with Korean traditional things and the modern culture. One of the must see in Seoul
