strange

It was kinda strange to visit the Anne Frank house, since Ive seen so many documentairies about her, (almost finished) read(ing) her book and visiting Auschwitz and all..
I found it very hard to grasp the atmosphere and imagine myself in Anne’s place, what she must have felt and thought. It was relatively quite on tuesday but it still felt like I was just looking for another apartment.. maybe because we’re thinking about moving and we spend the last 2 years living in golden age atticks..
also, seeing the diary itself… It was special, but it was so strange to see the real thing..
maybe I should go again, in winter..
my deepest regret is that I couldn’t figger out which of the trees was THE tree.. We had a discussion about it, and now Im wondering if they hadn’t cut it down yet.
Maybe Ill go again next week or so, just to see the tree..
(Just saw on the wikipedia site Anne described the tree 3 times, the first time on my birthday (excl. year ofcourse.) stupid.. but I find myself even more connected with the tree.. SAVE THE TREE!)

The first time I went to this place

I was the same age as Anne when I went to this house. It resonanted with me deeply, as her life at my age was so different than my own.

Why I recommend this place to visitors

It was all that it was supposed to be. It was the only reason that I absolutely HAD to go to Amsterdam. I had read the diary (numerous times), seen the TV series and movies, read the background books, watched the documentaries. The presence that was there was overwhelming. Anyone with the slightest interest in the Holocaust or the story of Anne Frank deserves this trip.

It really made me want to read the diary, though at a time when I am happy enough to deal with the emotion of it.

Silent reverence

I read Anne Franks Diary when I was a little girl, and I always promised myself that I would someday go and see the place where she spent the last days of her young life. I was overjoyed to have finally made it. Her house sits on a street halved by a canal, and it’s a very unremarkable house. You’d miss it easily if you were walking by and not paying attention. It’s an important place to go simply because you can bear witness to another piece of history and the reality of the holocaust. Inside the house is a very simple museum that takes you through the home and into the secret attic where the Frank family hid. It’s not a place that is going to entertain you and really be a fun thing to do, it’s sad but it brings a simple book to life, and gives you a chance to see a part of the life of Anne Frank.

It is amazing to see

how these people had to live. After reading the story as a kid, it really hit home to see the actual place where everything happened.

I always thought of going there because as a child I used to watch II WW films with my mom. I read the book more than twice and it was like kind of a dream… A week ago I finally went there and I think it´s been one of the most overwhelming experiences of my life… You become aware that everything really happened and that it wasn´t just a film or a book. You can almost feel the fear and the total anguish and darkness of the place… I couldn´t speak for a long while after that.
