I never really thought the Washington Monument was that fabulous. There are so many beautiful things to see, I wasn’t terribly interested in the tall, marble, phallic thing.
And then… I lived in Arlington for a bit, right across the street from the Iwo Jima memorial, and had to cross an overpass on foot every day to get to the metro. The first morning I did this I stopped for a lenghty period of time and stood amazed and the breathtaking sight of the lincoln and washington monuments, along with the capitol building, all in line in a straight row. It doesn’t sound all that awe-inspiring. But to see it, every morning, sometimes at sunrise, sometimes with haze or fog, and sometimes surrounded in blue, is to feel truly American.
A side note- the Washington Monument was made in 3 stages, and because of the time that elapsed between construction (once due to the civil war, and I cannot recall the reason for the other pause) the original, and then secodary, source of marble ran out. If you look carefully, you can read the story of the monument in the color variations in the marble.
