Big Island aka: Hawai'i, Hawaii Island

Seeing the warm lava flowing out of the hillside and sizzling into the sea is perhaps the most amazing thing I have ever witnessed. Hiking in the dark over uneven lava fields, some warm from lava flowing beneath them, only intensified the experience. At same time exhilarating and terrifying to see what this earth can do.

When I fly to Hawai’i, it’s always to Oahu. I need to get out of this rut and fly to other islands.

i grew up here. my dad used to take my sister and me “riding” now and then around the island or to some island site and then quiz us on what we saw or what he told us about the place. we went to the volcano for a drive or to kona for shopping, south point now and then, kawaihai was my dad’s beach of choice…if you ever find yourself on the big island, you HAVE to see the lava flow.

My wife and I just spent 10 days on the Big Island a few months ago on our honeymoon and had the best time! The Big Island is very laid back with lots to see and do! We snorkeled, rode horses in the valley, hiked around the volcano, rode in a helicopter over the volcano, walked on black sand beaches, and found LOADS of great places to eat and drink!

One of our favorite spots was the Hawaiian Vanilla Company farm & restaurant. Their luncheon was great and not too expensive!

I’ve only been there once. It was cool – I’m afraid I am partial to Kaua’i and Maui more, but the Big Island was still an awesome placve to visit. I would love to go back (now that I’m older) so that I can see the volcanoes (my parents thought I was too young when we went earlier).

Great island with diverse environment, from snow to desert to rock to beaches to tropical rainforest to tundra. Stayed in Arnott’s lodge, great, clean, cheap. And also stayed in Manago Hotel, clean, old, friendly. Went to lava flow, north shore, refuge, and to the southernmost point of the USA, in 2002.

Back in 1985 was the last time I had been back to Hawaii. I was on the big Island and loved it. back than I was in my 20’s. I told myself back than I want to retire here. This is what I am planning right now in my life is moving to the big Island. I love being surrounded by ocean, beaches and mountians what better place to live than there. I know it is very expensive. I believe I can make it work if I plan it out and stick to it.

Hello, my wife and I (he 26, she 30) will be in Hawaii from May 18th to the 30th. From the 24th-30th we will be in (and around) Hilo and would like to do a hiking trip (with or without a tour guide) and it would be cheaper if we found some more people to come with. Or if we dont do the guided tour, its always a good idea to go with other people rather than alone. Please write if your interested.

One side of the island is just volcanic rock and the other side is a tropical forest. The beaches were diverse as well with one beach being black sand, another white sand, and the other being green sand. We weren’t allowed to go on the green or black sand beach.
Snorkeling was amazing. You could walk out off of any beach and see amazing and colorful fish everytime.
