We were in California for a full two weeks and one of the things I dreamed of doing was going down to Big Sur. And so we did. Even though I was sick (developing a sinus infection—and worse) and it was quite a long drive for a day trip.
We found out about a restaurant named Nepenthe and made reservations a good long while in advance. Nepenthe is perched, cantilevered, on a hill, jutting out over the steep decline of the hillside into the ocean below. It seems like the only sign of civilization around for miles.
We had a late dinner, sitting outside on one of Nepenthe’s decks, watching the sun go down over the hills and crashing surf—worth it. The $30 steaks may not be great, but you won’t notice the taste, as long as your eyes are open.
The view and weather was amazing – so amazing, we didn’t want to leave (again with the 3 hour drive). We lingered as late as they’d let us, around the firepit; the flames danced, the moon rose over the steep hills, and the breezes blew gently.
It was incredible.
To this day, when I smell a certain kind of wood burning in someone’s fireplace - and I don’t know what type - it takes me right back.

Certainly one of the most beautiful places in the world, Big Sur is a scenic masterpiece.
Unless you know the local spots, however, your sigh-seeing will be mostly confined to the guardrails of Highway 1. There are wonderful places to go here with tight, windy, hidden roads taking you down to fantastic beaches and restaurants.
Most people spend their time at Nepenthe because it is one of the better restaurants but mainly because it’s one of the few places you can actually FIND.
Gas up and be prepared to be amazed. If it’s foggy, come back the next day – its worth it.

I want to go here because it looks so incredibly beautiful. I keep hearing it is the most beautiful part of the California coast. We are driving down the Oregon and California coasts in a few weeks, and definitely will go to/through Big Sur. I can’t wait.

We went to this amazing resturant ( http://www.nepenthebigsur.com/kevah/kevah.html ) that had a huge patio built on the very edge of the mountain. We sat and had dinner over a sea of clouds broken by the tree covered hills surounding us. Just as our after dinner drinks arrived, a wind picked up and took the clouds out to sea alowing us the most beautiful sunset I have ever been witnes to.
