Get there before 5 AM! I missed the Tuna auction. Still had a blast though, and sushi breakfast outside the fish market was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Don’t forget your camera!

A review of this place: Busy and Fishy

Interesting place visit… but I can’t imagine going twice. Unless it was for the super fresh sushi. The different kinds of fish were pretty cool… and the hectic pace of everyone running around was a little nerve-wrecking. It’s one of the only places in Japan where I felt like it was more like China than Japan.

The first time I went to this place

We spent an interesting morning exploring the Tsukiji Fish Markets. Apparently, the market sells more than 400 different kinds of seafood. Some we could recognise and on the identities of others we were clueless. We saw cases of bright red octopus, barrels of live eels and massive frozen tunas. We watched as men sliced up the tuna with a huge electric saw. Mmmm Sashimi. We also ate our first proper sushi / sashimi meal at the fish market.

A tip I have about this place

Check the market’s calendar before you go. The market is closed 37 days out of a year in addition to Sundays. I learned it the hard way….. Be ready to have sashimi for breakfast once you are in Tsukiji.
