Really nice, historic island

“The most bombed square mile on Earth.” This is where Gen Douglas Mac Aurthur famously and defiantly said “I shall return.” Its a marvel of World War II history. The Rock was an important tactical point and the battle for it is an important part of both American and Filipino history. It’s so peaceful and you can really feel the cool ocean breeze. The views are simply breathtaking! This is quite possibly, the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. If you take the guided tour of ths island be sure to ask for Pablito. He’s an older gentlemen who truly knows the island and it’s history. He has given tours to presidents, dimplomats and many famous people. Also, be sure to tip him under the table (they aren’t “allowed” to accept tips). 100-200 pesos would be considered a nice tip. This is only 2-4 US Dollars. Not much to an American but to him it’s a nice bonus and sign of appreciation. A nice way to say thanks to a truly hard working Filipino tour guide.

Corregidor Island

Why I want to go to this place

Why? Because the island is the perfect getaway. It’s only 1.5 hours away from Manila. It has no air pollution, and no crime. There’s no heavy traffic, no panhandlers, no mulcting taxi drivers. Nada. It’s really a tourist paradise.

In order to be thoroughly appreciated, one must realize that Corregidor is an integral part of Philippine history. If you know the exicitng stories behind each fortification, you’ll see the island’s World War II story unfold like a colorful tapestry. The cannons are far from boring!

A common question I hear from people who haven’t been there is “What can you do there anyway?”. Well, there’s a LOT of stuff that you can do on the island!. Aside from being a veritable World War II Theme Park (no other place like it!), the island is a perfect venue for many types of activities. It’s ideal for picnics, hiking, jogging, cycling, kite-flying, and photography to name just a few.

As the decades pass, and the memories of World War II begin to recede into the mists of time, newer generations must be reminded of the bravery and gallantry of the thousands of men who fought and died for our freedom.

Corregidor Island is indeed a must-see!

a trip of mixed emotions...

on one hand, you can get bored with the cannons

on the other hand, the guide’s narrative can bring you to a time filled with hope and strife… to a time of heroes and senseless deaths

it’s actually creepy checking out tunnels and gunpowder repositories… amazing how BIG the cannons are

I shall return

The first and last time I went to Corregidor was during a very disorganized trip. Not to mention the fact that I don’t have a camera yet.

I want to go back again to discover more about the island, and take pictures to practice photography again.

Target date: March or April 2006

Great History

Corregidor Island is a wonderful tribute to American history during the 2nd World War, which took place in the Pacific. The Tunnel is a jaw-dropping replication of how America’s ‘Best Generation’ lived their lives during the war. Great monuments! A History Buff’s dream.

History

This island has a ton of American history. Buildings that were bombed. Holes everywhere from bombs. They still have cannons in the positions they were in during the war. And the island itself is beautiful.
