Really

It’s just a college city. I found it rather charming and stopped in at the Empire to have a beer. I enjoyed people watching before heading into MN.

Mid-America at it's worst

Go to Winnipeg. I love Winnipeg. At the very least go to Minneapolis. I wasted 4 years of my life in Fargo. Fargo’s worst offense is that it’s so painfully bland. Fargo’s culture isn’t really a culture. Whatever cultural values that the first Scandinavian and German settlers brought with them has been thoroughly diluted by the American marketing machine. It’s a place that’s been utterly consumed by corporate consumerism. All there is to do is eat at chain restaurants, buy shit from China at chain retail stores, and get annihilated at over-commercialized bars with no atmosphere. It’s a horribly depressing and naive place full of sidewaysed hatted, Abercrombie wearing, truck driving idiots, who blare generic rap or the latest “country” on their stereos and swear that piss like Bud Light is god’s nectar. It’s basically just a suburbanized, ever-sprawling, marketers wet dream. Forget about walking anywhere in Fargo because many of the sidewalks aren’t cleared in the winter and it has the population density of the Sahara desert. Well not quite but apparently Fargo city planners didn’t get the memo that sprawl is a method of human habitation that has no future. “Ugly American” comes to mind when thinking of Fargo. Fuck that place! (Sorry to sound so pretentious but that’s my honest opinion)

A tip I have about this place

I spent the summer of 2006 in Fargo. Don’t let the fact it’s in North Dakota or its size create doubt. Fargo is a great place to visit, the people are amazing, and if you need help with anything regarding it, you may feel free to contact me regarding it.

A tip I have about this place

You may have to do a little searching to find what you want, but it’s probably here. It’s not a huge city. It has diversity, but you have to look for it. Sports? Junior hockey, minor league baseball, LOTS of college sports. Music? Opera, Jazz, the FM Orchestra, coffee houses, Playmaker’s House of Rock . . . We’re close to Buffalo State Park, if you like backpacking. Lots of churches, lots of bars. Lots of volunteer opportunities, and lots of places to shop. (I recommend downtown!)

Born & Raised

Yes, that’s right, born & raised in Fargo. No, we don’t have accents like the movie (which, by the way, was filmed in Brainerd, MN). And yes, there’s actually stuff to do here. It’s no Chicago, and sometimes you have to look for it, but it’s a pretty cool place. Just the right size, too. Not too big, not too small. And probably more restaurants per capita than any other city in the U.S. Yeah, we like food.

Best bets are downtown. I recommend Sammy’s Pizza, Juano’s, Barbara’s Deli, Old Broadway, and the HoDo for food. Hotel Donaldson is a fab place to stay, and pretty freaking affordable when compared to similar places in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Shopping downtown is generally good as well, but don’t expect much in the way of funky clothing stores. Museums are scarcer, but good. Plains Art is generally good, as is the Rourke. Hjemkomst Center (in Moorhead, just across the Red River) is cool, with a replica Viking ship & Stave Kirke (stave church), for you Scandi-interested. We’ve got a symphony, an opera, and three colleges in the area, so there’s always SOMETHING going on.

An excellent place to live.
