If you live for crystal clear water made up of a million shades of blue and turquoise…this is the place. Though I was only 11 years old when I went, it “ruined” my swimming forever. Upon returning to the midwest, I could never again step foot in a Michigan lake. Corfu set the bar!

We went to Pelekas Beach for days on sun’n’sand. It’s a beautiful beach with ample sunchairs and lots of relaxing. The hostel we stayed at was the Sunrock Backpackers Hostel. The place is cute and small but great staff and accomodations include free breakfast and dinner!

...for well over a week in 1980. Lots of backpackers, a couple of restaurants, and two showers. It was one of my first trips on my own, and I still remember lying there in my sleeping bag looking at the stars before falling asleep.

It was beautiful and sparse 20 years ago. These days, beaches that were devoid of structures and tourists are packed with both. A shame. It’s worth visiting but not worth staying for longer than a week, unless you really like crowds. We used to camp out in the olive groves and have breakfast, which we paid for, with the farmers. Having a braying donkey as your alarm clock was a treat. Most headache-inducing thing that happened there 20 years ago was the decision as to which deserted beach one was going to go to that day. Well, that and the retsina-ouzo drink combination that the always-travelling Aussies came up with.
