Les Catacombes aka: Catacombs of Paris

We descended into the gloom and walked past 3 million dead people. It’s damp and creepy and very worth taking the time to visit.

Not as scary or cold or wet as I had envisioned. A very special place.

And when they say “do not touch anything” that includes not placing your camera on a pile of bones to take photos by using a timer!

And when they say “do not use flash, no flash photography allowed” they mean turn off the flash on your camera. If you don’t know how to do that or you are not sure, just don’t take any photos in this sacred place. Down in the catacombs is not the time to try to learn how to do anything new with your camera. Freaking tourists, eh?

I think that a lot of people miss the catacombes when they travel to Paris. When I went, it was completely empty, which made the whole experience that much more amazing. You take a stairway down for what feels like forever, and then you’re alone, in the dark, with hundreds upon hundreds of real bones and skulls staring back at you. It was surreal, and one of the most unique experiences I had while I was visiting France. I definitely recommend it to everyone!

They always seem to be closed, but when you finally make it down, you’ll find that it’s well worth the trip. Pay attention to the dates on the walls after you get down the spiral staircase. There are bones behind them walls, it makes it a little bit freakier thinking about that. This place goes on forever and is really one of the most amazing sights I’ve ever seen.

The creepiest thing is when you realize the piles of bones and skulls aren’t just a few feet deep, but are tens of feet deep, sometimes extending back as far as 50 feet…

What a wicked place! It’s not filled to the brim with tourists which is a very refreshing change.
The place has history, it’s spectacular, I recommend take you time, and place DON’T TAKE PICTURES. Respect the graves!
The walls are damp and chilling, it’s fun to go with a group, walk slowly, soak it all in, and read all the information at the beginning before you actually enter the real catacombs.

This is just one of the coolest places I’ve been to. It’s refreshing, sobering and life-affirming to walk the damp tunnels among the skulls.

I’d reccomend it to everyone.

Should also be prescribed to all teens among with the epic of Gilgamesh. ;-)

And, yes, there ARE rats down there! And a lot of other things, like skulls piled high and deep…very interesting. But not for everybody.
