I was on pilgrimage in Nov. 2001, just after 9/11. We were supposed to dance the 21 Praises of Tara for the Dalai Lama, but he was called away to a Peace Conference. We did dance for his sister, head of the Tibetan Children’s Village, and the Karmapa. It is an incredible place, full of spirit and peace in the midst of so much suffering.

Dharamsala was an experience that is not easily put into words. It is calming, spiritual, amazing blend of sights, smells and sounds. There are so many amazing little parts to Dharamsala that make it worth the crazy overnight bus ride.

I have been to Mcleod ganj, or Upper Dharamsala twice, the last time in November 2004.Of course this is the home of the Tibetan government in exile, and you can visit the home of the Dali Lama.
Its really nice up there, the air is clean, the temperatures were nice, although cold at night at that time of year. Snow capped mountains provide a beautiful panaramic view. Lots of great food to eat, some wonderful Tibetan food can be found here. There are many nice areas to trek, such as Triund, or just go for a quiet walk, as well as classes you can take for cooking, meditation, yoga, etc. The touts are not bad here like in cities like Delhi, but you will come across a beggar here and there, at least this was my experience. It’s a long harrowing bus ride up the steep mountain side to get here, but well worth it.
