Rikka hotel

Is great and it has a pool on the roof. Stayed here at the beginning and end of my trip. Warning: it could take up to an hour to get to the airport from here at rush hour. http://www.rikkainn.com/room_rate.html

Khaosan Road

khaosan Road was our first stopping place when we arrived in Bangkok, getting dropped of by the bus from the airport which gave us an interesting glimpse into the surrounding area and the heart of the city.

Khaosan is an interesting place to see, full of backpackers, street markets and vendors and people constantly trying to sell you something, or offer you a taxi or tuk-tuk ride. It’s worth stopping around there over night so you get to see if during the light, and dark and you’ll be able to pick up anything you might need for your time in Thailand so it makes a handy starting point. There is little point in buying clothing for a hot climate at home when it’s so much cheaper, and more interesting to buy locally.

I couldn’t see my self stopping around for more then a day or so however, as interesting as it is, the crazy flow of tourists and constant interest from locals trying to sell you something can lose it’s appeal very quickly, it’s a place to stop and settle after a flight out, use as a stopping point when traveling cross country, and somewhere to get some interesting presents for people back home on your way back to the airport to go home.

A review of this place

Good place to stay if you are getting in on a late night/early morning flight. There are almost always rooms available. You will definitely not be getting the true Thai experience however. The place is overrun with tourists, backpackers, and locals trying to cater to them in any and all ways possible. Oh and the music at the watering holes on khao san is from 10 years ago. So if you have been aching to hear Oasis again this is the place for you.

A review of this place

This one little street has more noise, lights and people than a whole cities I have been to. The atmosphere, with backpackers from all over the world, rows of shops selling all sorts of souvenirs, barely dressed Thai girls passing out flyers to the nearest club or massage parlour, ladyboys serving you pad thai, oh its gotta be seen to enjoy!

We were actually there the weekend after the New Years Eve Bombings and even though there were army officers roaming the streets the overall vibe seemed completely unaffected by it all.

Dont trust ANY guy telling you that tuk tuks are 20BHT for that particular day because of some festival happening! We almost got scammed and we found out about this scam when we got home – thank god we trusted our instincts!

A review of this place: Noisy but convenient

Not so fun if you’re staying on the road itself… it can get pretty noisy at night, and expensive… but if you head off to one of the adjoining road you can find much cheaper accommodation and it’s not far from the action. The markets are not so good though… you can get stuff heaps cheaper elsewhere. Nice to visit though.

khaosan- day and night

although i live in bangkok going to khaosan road is still interesting—all the tourists, food, places to hang out
- i think the best thing about khaosan road is that it’s right in the middle of bangkok, in the old town, so you have plenty of choices as to what to do and where to go -
have fun!

ok for shopping if you are not going to get out of bangkok. Chang Mai is better if you want the touristy kind of stuff but don’t want as much hassle.

not my kind of place but it marginally ranked a ‘worth visiting!’, only because i picked up some cushion covers from northern thailand that matched the ones my parents bought in the 70s that were falling apart :)
