A pile of junk

This is a pile of junk stapled together in a neighborhood that’s full of racial tension. If you drive there (pretty much the only way to go), you go through the “jungle”. Those are streets that are curved with speed bumps and only one way in and out. The streets are designed like that to deter drive by shooters. The “towers” are in an isolated area. When you drive there, you probably will have to stop on a street in the cut and stop your vehicle for a couple of minutes to wait for the train to go by. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Weird but cool

I came and saw a pile of “historic” trash and tiles as the Watts Towers … (i only like the watts towers because it they used my last name :P)

... Then, talk about ghetto. Trash on streets, graphitti …

But the soul food is so good!

I went as kid in high school...

and was truly impressed, but the thing I remember most is being surprised about how small they were in relation to what I expected.

But incredible, just the same!

Talk About Passion

It is awesome to see these towers in person. It boggles my mind how a man without any formal architectutral training built these sculptures that have withstand time and the earthquakes of California.

What could have possessed this man to build his “Nuestro Pueblo” for 33 years? Is this what is called passion? Simon Rodia’s calling in life? To built this art single-handidly with the tallest tower standing at 99 1/2 feet.

I enjoyed the tour of the towers. The colors are so varied and the materials used were ingenous. I loved taking the photographs of the tower of the hearts in particular, it just speaks to me of true love of what he was creating. This man had a sense of purpose. Did he listen to his inner self, that voice that beckons us if we only listen?
