Cape Hatteras

Stay a few days in Rodanthe, take a day trip to Ocracoke (free ferry is a 30 minute boat ride), climb to the top of the lighthouse, visit the ranger station, watch some birds, sleep in the sun, look for dolphins, go fishing or diving—some of the best of everything is here.

Plan a day just to drive down Highway 12 from Kitty Hawk. It is that lovely—you’ll want to stop often. Bring your swimsuit and a snack or two.

Caution: the sea is rough. The Newfoundland Current affects the water and even the type of sand on the beach north of Hatteras Point. South of Hatteras Point the beach is effected by the Gulf Stream so the water is warmer. Wherever you are it is beautiful.

My best friend and I go every thanksgiving. It is an amazing and beautiful place. I have never been during tourist season though, and don’t ever plan on it.

I’ve lived only a few hours away for my entire life, but I’ve never been. Situation must be rectified, post haste.

Vacation is right around the corner. I usually like going to places I have never been but Hatteras in the Outer Banks has caught my heart. Waking up every morning to the sounds of the ocean. Relaxing and not worrying about life. Making the trip to Howard’s on Ocracoke Island. Watching the ships come in the marina. At least one day of fishing. Traveling up to see the lighthouse again. Eating some good bar-b-q and washing it down with some sweet tea. Well everyone cross their fingers for no hurricane. 17th to the 24th this month(Sept 2005), Hatteras here I come again.
