I am a huge fanboy (someone slightly obsessed with comic books), and this just happened to be my first stop as a married man. The fact that my wife and I are still together must mean it was meant to be.
For anyone who is not a super fan of comic books, save your gas money and head on to a real vacation spot, but for the faithful this is a great place to stop and stretch your legs.
The entire town is obsessed with Superman, from their drug store to the Superman Museum, the whole place is red, blue, and yellow.
The Museum was cool, but may not be worth the price unless you are a huge fan of the Man of Steel. Other than the museum, there is a whole lot of nuthin’ going on in this town.
P.S. Watch your speed going down the highway in this area, I received a really bad speeding ticket coming into town.

I have two friends Kelley & Shelby that I was pen pals with and now we pretty much just talk online but I have never met them but they are both amazing people. So I plan to meet them one day and they live in Metropolis. Plus… Metropolis… Superman… that’s pretty cool.

Bleh. . . .it is a great place to visit in June the second week in June to be more exact, for the Superman Celebration. Make sure you visit the Superman Museum owned by my father Jim Hambrick. I lived there for 10 years. In 1996/7 I lived above the Supermuseum. My bedroom window had a nice view of the statue. I painted that statue three years in a row. I visited Metropolis for last years celebration. I brought my friend Dan with me. I dressed like Supergirl for the first time in my life during the Superman Celebration. It was nice to be a visitor.

I can’t say much about the town at all but I’ve stopped a few times in the town just for the Superman statue. It was worth the stop for me. Everyone else who happened to be along on the trips seemed to enjoy it too.

If you’re interested in touristy stuff, this town has taken advantage of the Superman fame in a lot of ways. It’s extremely cliche, but very cute.

until the hostage crisis. Can anyone verify or correct this? If it isn’t this town, it’s another in Illinois.
Otherwise, I don’t recall much memorable about this place. Golconda and Cairo are more interesting. There are various forest remnants which you can visit in Southern Illinois. Do your homework, and write ahead to let folk know you’re coming. This might help you get more out of the trip.
The photo is more impressive than the actual stature. But hey, whatever floats your boat!

I worked in Metropolis and lived in a small community nearby. This part of Southern Illinois is beautiful, it is God’s country, you have to see it to believe it. It is located near the Shawnee National Forest. People are down home, friendly and it is slow paced.
