Mammoth Cave

I’ve been in quite a few caves; Mammoth Cave is HUGE. There are rooms as large as the Metrodome. When you visit, there are several distinct entry points and tours with various levels of access. Experienced cavers should go for the most challenging, I think. Better yet, hook up with a local spelunking group ahead of time and you can explore parts that are not open to the public through the National Park Service.

I visited with a group I’m in and we went on a tour (not sure which). It was pretty cool inside and the lights went off whenever another tour group came in, much to my amusement as several people in the group would let out high pitched shrieks. In their defense we were going down slippery metal stairs. It was very beautiful inside and the area around the caves is very serene. Even with the gobbling of free-roaming turkeys.

If you live in the midwest and can’t get down to Florida on Spring Break – this cave is the place to be – its consistently 58(?) degrees, which is much warmer than Michigan in March!!!

and I’ve done most of them. lantern tours, historic tour, and the wild cave tour. which was a total blast.

I visited Mammoth Cave during my freshman year of highschool after I marched with the band in the Pegasus Parade. (We won the grand prize!) I was most impressed with the restrooms inside the cave!

Went here with a friend in on a road trip in 2000…it was fun.

My boyfriend and I went last summer for a shorter, more educational version of a vacation. We did the typical cave tour and hiking, but also decided to be a little adventurous. The cave spelunking is definitely worth doing. We took the shorter spelunking trip, which was probably around 3 hrs, and got midly dirty in the process, but you actually do have to climb and crawl through the cave. We hope to go back for the longer tour!

I’m not a big cave fan, so I didn’t think that much of the cave itself. Gotta admit the cave is ginormous. But the surface with the old growth forest is very cool to me – just loved the trees and how calm it felt there.

I visit here about 24 years ago. This is worth visiting if you don’t have health or mobility issues, are not terrified of the dark, have no issues with heights nor claustrophobia. It is a really cool place (and literally) to see.

I never thought that Caves would be this interesting. You don’t have to be a geologist to appreciate these formations. Take the 2 or 5 mile tour.. its worth it.
