Corn Palace

although when I first saw the tops of it over the neighboring buildings, I laughed! It’s really an absurd building, but I needed a thing to drive towards on my trip, and I love that I can now tell people that I’ve been to “The World’s Only Corn Palace”, as the building proudly proclaims. It’s amazing in its own way—don’t expect to be entertained by anything other than the fact that it exists.

my father never stopped on road trips…we finally convinced him he had to detour 50 miles out of the way to go to the Corn Palace. We got there mid-morning, late Summer, and the entire building was being attacked by birds. It was terrifying. People running everywhere…poop everywhere…corn flying all over the place….

we never even got out of the car.

and my father to this day uses the corn palace as an example of all the bad reasons to make stops on trips.

We stopped here on our trip acrosss the country. My mom kept telling me that we had to stop – so for her, I did it. She really wanted a postcard from there. It was definitely bizarre. We were there in the summer, so they were just putting up the corn, and the Corn Palace wasn’t in it’s full glory yet. We wandered the museum and took some pictures. It is worth a stop as it is completely cheesy. Also, it’s insane to think that this town pretty much exists because the Corn Palace is there.

Must stop in just to see the monument to corn. It is in every sense of the word – CORNY.

Corn. Inside I expect all sorts of corn-related wonders worthy of the ‘palace’ name. Right, some high school basketball gym or something inside. What the…!??

Not even one corn dog, corn on the cob, creamed corn.. corn flakes, cornbread, nuttin

113 degrees – long drive – the middle of nowhere – NOT worth it!!

Don’t plan on spending a lot of time here. It is sorta like the big ball of string, once you have seen it, you have seen it.

I would say its worth going to BUT do NOT make this the focal point of your trip. The day I went I basically drove across South Dakota, and I stopped here as a way of breaking up the drive. With that being the purpose, it was worth it. Every year they make murals on the sides of the building out of corn. Every year they are different. If you go inside, you can see pictures of the ones from previous years. It serves as a theater/gym/auditorium for the town it is in.

So we stopped at anywhere along our route with more than 3 billboards, and that included the corn palace. It is really a sight, with the building front designed entirely from corn. The last thing you expect this thing to be is a basketball stadium! However, I’m not sure it’s worth the 30 minute detour… If you’ve got the time though, sure, it’s amusing.

We used to take family trips skiing every year and we’d drive from MN to Colorado. It’s incredible the things you can see in the States driving cross-country. This was one of them. I still remember it from when I was a kid.
