Aquarium Of The Americas

It was still closed from Katrina when I was in town. :(

I visited when I was about 10 years old and I will always remember petting the sharks and stingrays! :)

the aquarium was always the smarter summer destination as opposed to Audubon Zoo. Ahh the wonderful air condition! After you can visit the IMAX which of course is awesome! It’s not just the animals that I like at the aquarium; the entire place just brings back lots of childhood memories. But I did cry when I found out how many of the fish died after the stupid hurricane :(

I got to pet a small shark and a starfish. It was alright, but after awhile it got monotonous. Fish, fish, shark, unidentified critter, fish… Petting the shark was probably the best thing.

The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is fantastic!There are many great exhibits, including the Amazon Rainforest room, which is very large and made out of glass for the most part, and there are very many Touch Pools, where you can pet sharks, starfish, and many other aquatic animals. This place is absolutely wonderful to go to while you’re in New Orleans, escpecially if you have kids.

How did it fair in the hurricane?

I don’t know how the aquarium weathered Katrina (no pun intended) but I do know that it was so worth a visit beforehand. It was amsolutely amazing!!!. In the lobby, they had these ceramic sculptures hanging from the ceiling of sharks, from like, a nurse shark to a whale share (which is HUGE!). It was very much worth the two hours I spent with my mom there.

One of the best aquariums I’ve been to. Lots of seahorses. The paddlefish was pretty cool.

Of all the truly horrible things that happened because of the mismanagement of Hurricane Katrina, this hit me probably the hardest. I remember those lost animals every day.
