Annual pilgrimage for Texas students

I’m not kidding. I lived in Houston for four years and we took a field trip to visit the Alamo every year. And it wasn’t just for Texas history class (7th grade), either.

I’m sure it’s nice, but of everything about my first trip to San Antonio, the Alamo is what I sticks out in my mind the least. Not very memorable.

Things I learned at the Alamo:
the day of the seige ended on March 6th, 1836.

A man named Travis commanded the outfit.
There were actually some survivors, although most were women and children.

San Antonio,Texas…I do not remember much about the trip to see The Alamo. I do remember that it was common to see squished armadillo’s on the road sides. I was only 11, I wouldn’t mind going back and seeing it through the eyes of an adult.

The last time I went to this place

Our daughter was graduating from Air Force basic training. A happy trip, but a sad day when we left her to go home – my baby was leaving home and starting out on her own!

It's a true story...

When I first moved to Florida in 1990, people I met kept asking me about the Alamo. It’s a historic landmark and like most people, I kind of lost some of my appreciation for it over the years. You can only have so many school field trips to the Alamo. My general answer to questions about the Alamo became that it was a pile of rocks. However, one day I did tell the story of when Ozzy Osbourne peed on the Alamo and got banned from the city. :P It’s a true story!
