I stayed at the New Izu Hotel In Ueno, wan’t the best hotel, but was cheap and comfortable, and was one of the few that had rooms for three people. We basically took the Yamanote Line to all the places in Tokyo and it was awesome. I think I’d like to stay in Ueno again when I go back, or rent an apartment for a month and stay with my girlfriend and others.

The Ueno market has lots of men’s clothing, and some eclectic tshirt stores. Lots of street food as well.

Ueno’s buildings look older, more run down. I didn’t wander around much except to go to the museums. Adult video posters plastered outside a theatre entrance was very visible.

My friend and I met a crazy guy who was very nice but kept insiting that we talk to all the young Japanese people because, “communication is important.” Then he gave us a little monkey (it was 2004) charm. So that was neat. And the park was nice by itself, as a green oasis in the middle of Tokyo.

Ueno Park is lovely, and there’s a ryokan just down the street where you can stay. The Tokyo National Museum is on one end of the park; its art and historical exhibitions are spectacular. On Sundays the park typically comes alive with performers, and you can usually find street vendors serving up hot food too. Ueno’s got the convenience of Tokyo without as much hustle and bustle. There are some great restaurants in the area, too. Just one word of warning: beware the pigeons!
