Spiritual yes, but have respect

I find it odd that people talk about what a spiritual place it is, then climb the rock despite being asked by the local indigenous people not to because of its spiritual significance.

Also, the resort capitalises on the Aboriginal history and culture to charge exhorbitant prices for tourists to stay there and buy tea towels with aboriginal art on them, yet it won’t employ aboriginal people except work experience (free labour) girls (not boys) who work in the kitchen (and not seen). In the shadow of the rock is the Mututjulu community that is a world apart from the resort at Yulara.

However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t visit the place. It is really quite an experience. Seeing photos of it all my life, I didn’t realise it was basically just one big rock, like the rocks you see on the beach, only the size of a mountain – till you see it up close, you manage to convince yourself that it is just a mountain, not a monolith (single rock). Because it is one rock, it changes colour in different light (sunset and sunrise particularly), and with rain, when waterfalls form on the rock. The surrounding countryside is also interesting – small dwarved shrubs and bright red soil.

It is worth travelling around the park, see the ranger centre, see Kata-tjuta.

It’s a big rock. But it is very pretty, especially at sunset when it changes colours.

I was five when I climbed Ayers Rock, and I accidentally did it alone.
My dad is elderly, so when I saw him waving his hand as he was doubled over, I thought that meant go on. Turns out that really meant stop…
I ended up climbing most of it alone, with some help from some tourists because it was fly season and once I’d climbed high enough, I didn’t want to wear the unnecessary mask. I was talking with some people and they offered to hold it for me. I guess they still have that mask, considering I forgot all about it once I got to the top.

Uluru is amazing, you can never forget it.

What I want to do at this place

I’ve been here at Christmas few years ago. It has changed my life, my thought, my way how I look at the world…

This place is really beautiful and big, with most of the rock being under the ground. I climbed to the top. It was difficult, but very rewarding. I recommend anybody do this, but be very mindful that it’s a spiritual place for the aboriginal people. (And they don’t really want people walking all over it.) It’s much higher than you think and the view from the top is spectacular.
