Christchurch aka: Ōtautahi

I have lived in Christchurch almost all my life and i absolutely love it! Its the south islands biggest city but your’re also not far away from beautiful country scenery. Christchurch is a very picturesque city, with a strong english heritage.

I wanted to visit Christchurch, New Zealand to check it out as a new place to settle down.

Exploring my home country!

I live in Christchurch – was born here, and love living here. It has a population of around 400,000, big enough to have lots of opportunities and choices, but small enough not to have big difficulties getting around. We can see the sea and snow on the mountains by climbing the Port Hills – five minutes drive for me. And we get good seasonal variation – beautiful spring with bulbs and blossom, crisp frosts in winter, hot nor-westers in summer and gorgeous colours in autumn.

I lived here during my first year of flatting. While I hated it then, due to feeling totally isolated and knowing no one. I feel I can appreciate it now, and wouldn’t be against ever living there if the decision or chance arose.

I really enjoyed the architecture and old buildings.

I lived here for almost a year and it was the most disgusting, stereotypical place i have ever been. The people are so judgemental and the place is disgusting in winter. If you didnt have to live there and was only visiting in summer it may be ok.

Obviously, the large number of incredibly gorgeous churches will be anyone’s first impression of Christchurch. The city lives up to its name slightly in that sense—although it only takes a few minutes to notice the counterculture just walking a few blocks out of Cathedral square.

What I didn’t expect was the relatively strong French influence in the city. Granted, the outer city of Akaroa is more French, but its proximity surely means something. Also, the small river and water gondolas that run through city center really add an incredible polish to an already beautiful city center. Last but not least, a bus ride to the small port city of Lyttelton is essential.

Good place to live as it is so close to so many different hideaways like ski fields, hot pools and all the really “cool” South Island destinations.
When I’m jonzing for a bit of big city living, I can easily jet off to Sydney and then come back to the peace of Christchurch.
