The first time I went to this place

Been here just once to see a friend. Not much different from other towns in NZ, houses, small streets etc. The city was quite hilly except the main street George St. And there was one other street (I don’t recall the name, sorry) which was claimed to be the steepest street in the world, unfortunately I didn’t get there.

A review of this place: Nothing special

Maybe I was missing something again, but I found Dunedin a bit of a let-down after the glories of Franz Jozef, Wanaka, and Glenorchy.

A pretty unremarkable town.

How this place changed my life

I have been living in Dunedin for 6 months during my school exchange trip in 2003. And I really loved, or still love, the city! Even though it might be a little off the way for most of the people visiting New Zealand and the South Island, this place is really worth a visit! My best memory is watching the sun set from Signall Hill, a viewpoint above the city with a perfect view over the whole city towards the beach and the harbour. Totally recommended =)

The first time I went to this place

...I was almost stepping into the unknown, going the farthest I had ever gone anywhere from where I lived, to meet people for the first time properly, and to see what life would be like in Dunedin for a week in September. And it was worth every moment. I can’t wait to get back there again in January.

My favorite city in New Zealand

I did a work abroad experience in New Zealand in 2004/2005 simply because Americans never do this. Overall, I’m glad that I did it but I never felt a connection anywhere. Not with the land, not with the people. But, Dunedin was different. It was special. It was the place I should’ve spent more time in. If it wasn’t so damn cold, I probably would’ve tried to live there too and not just Auckland and Wellington. I liken Dunedin to San Francisco. There’s just something about it inexplicable. Plus, there were plenty of food options for vegans/vegetarians.

The last time I went to this place

Firstly Dunedin is beautiful , full of period buildings , parks and bustling cafes. The long gently sloping streets mean its super easy to get around in , and the crisp bright mornings are the best excuse to get out for a run amongst one of the prettiest places in New Zealand.

Ive only been there once , it was for ID fashion week and i only had a few days but i was completely blown away by it all . The city is much larger than i expected and full of some of the most interesting innovative fashion designers this country has to offer – this place is a fashion destination . My partner and i enjoyed great fashion shopping , awesome cafe culture and sight seeing in mild but brisk Dunedin air – i cant wait to find an excuse to get back there !

An essential visit in the country, for beauty and history.

Dunedin may be the odd large city out of the top five or six, but without a doubt, it’s the most pioneering city in the country, having been the first to elevate country progression in so many ways. It’s also the city that meets most people’s high expectations of beauty, landscapes, and relaxation—and it’s been the most active source of the country’s music culture.

Visits to Port Chalmers, Larnach Castle, and especially the Otago Peninsula are absolutely essential.

As for the weather—well, I live in Seattle. Dunedin weather seemed like a milder version of Seattle weather, which is itself very mild weather. Sure, you need a sweater half the year at least, but that’s all. :)

Brilliant

Ancestors of mine moved here in the 19th C. and their descendants are still there. If you know Edinburgh in Scotland then be prepared for a surprise – its like someone took the Edinburgh street names and transplanted them here. They even have a statue of Rabbie Burns !
