The last time I went to this place

I was here for a DOD research program missile launch. Totally awesome. I spent time at the air force base there, then I drove south of the base toward El Paso, stopping along the way doing small excursions in the desert wild flowers to watch the sunset behind the mountains. Exquisite beauty.

The first time I went to this place

Simply incredible. I never imagined I would like it this much. This is now one of my two favorite national parks, the other one being Bryce Canyon in Utah. The sands are so white and pure, its really beautiful. I especially enjoyed walking a little off the beaten path – just park your car, MAKE SURE YOU REMEMBER WHERE IT IS, pick a direction and climb over 2 dunes or so and you will see the beauty of a virtually untouched sand dune. These pictures really don’t do the place justice. Amazing!

The first time I went to this place

The first time I went to this place was for a teacher’s training trip. I was amazed with the gypsum sand. But even more amazing was the flora and fauna of the area. As a science teacher that is into entomology I was captivated by small tracks in the sand. It turned out to be a dessert beetle but they looked fasinating. We also got to go the the source of the dunes to see the crystals that the sands are formed from. The dunes are accually formed through erosion of these crystals. They are located in the Military missil range that you can only go on by reservation only once a month. If you plan it right take the tour and get a greater appriciation for this natural wonder. Now I am planning to take my family to see them this year. I can’t wait to show them.

Camping on the sand

There is a section of the sands where you can camp over night. Go on a full moon because the light reflecting on the sand lights up the night. The constantly moving sand sounds like rain against the tent.

A Very Photogenic Place

The white sands make pictures look excellent. A camera that would normally take blurry shots of movement take crystal clear pictures. Also The vast white sand dunes make is very surreal looking.

Also the dunes make excellent slides, you can use anything that would work in the snow -a lot of fun.

By far, the most beautiful desert I have seen… despite the small size. Truely out of this world
