The first time I went to this place

Went backpacking in the late Spring. It was absolutely breathtaking. Spent the night at Ohanapecosh, then hiked up to Lake George and Gobbler’s Knob and was blown away by the view. We’ll be back at least once a year.

The first time I went to this place

My film school class (all eight of us) shot our final 16mm short film on Rainier, in late November 2004. Not too high up, nothing that took more than an hour to scale, carrying heavy equipment in deep snow, but still.

Both one of the best and one of the worst days of my life, at the same time.

The footage we shot on the mountain ended up being practically unusable, as either an odd malfunction with the film canister or loader error caused heavy light damage on the left side of the entire roll we arduously slaved to shoot. The director also abandoned the project just before editing began.

The mountain is majestically beautiful. Incredible at sunrise. Fantastic to behold while driving around Puget Sound, as it sits there, looking at you, waiting, inhabiting a big space in your peripheral vision.

And it owes me a shoe.

This was hands down the most fun thing I’ve done this summer. We hiked 4 miles up to Camp Muir, the base camp for folks that are planning to summit the mountain. The day we went was incredibly clear and we could see Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens. It’s a pretty difficult hike, almost 3000 feet in elevation gain over snow in the last 2 miles, plus you get up to 10,000 feet so you’re dealing with the change in the air as well. But it is all worthwhile because you then get to SLED down the mountain. So amazing, like being a kid in Michigan again except I never had to walk back up the hill, I could just keep sledding down.

Some tips if you plan on going:
  • Head out to the mountain early. It took us about 3.5 hours to get to the top and a little over 2 hours to get down, but we were moving pretty quickly.
  • Wear sunscreen and a lot of it. Trust me, I’m paying for it today with my sunburned legs and funny tan lines.
  • Take delicious food like french bread and brie cheese for lunch at the top. And lots of water, of course.
  • Take something to sled down on. We had giant trash bags that worked really well, but I also saw people with those little sleds that roll up and pizza pans.
  • Consider bringing an extra pair of pants or shorts. I didn’t and mine were soaking wet, but they had more or less dried completely by the time we reached the bottom of the mountain, so it’s not absolutely necessary.

Why I recommend this place to visitors

One of the more beautiful sights in this country and some excellent hiking. I will summit next year, but have hiked a majority of the Wonderland Trail and will do so again.

The first time I went to this place

I visited Mt. Rainier in June 2002. My sister had just had her third son, and the three children, my sister, mother, and I went up there. Mt. Rainier is the most breathtaking view. I felt really peaceful there. It’s quiet, scenic, and pretty cold even in June.

I visited a little lodge/shop where you can see the top of Mt. Rainier. It’s a log cabin type structure that just made it very rustic and natural. It is an incredible experience.
