Bryce Canyon National Park

Worth visiting!

Visited late Oct 08

I was not expected to be that surprised and amazed by the Bryce Canyon. Driving to it is beautiful but does not prepare you to see it – so different and so red! Great place to visit and spend some time. Strongly recommend hiking loop down – takes several hours but leaves you with moon-like memories and desire to do it again on a moment’s notice. I can recommend the lodge only besause of it location and the fact that it is locate dstps away from the rim.

The first time I went to this place

Bryce was recommended to me (and many hundreds of thousand others) by Alastair Cook on an edition of ‘Letter from America’. By lucky coincidence I was planning my first visit to the States at just that time. He said forget the Grand Canyon, go to Bryce and Zion instead. I was glad I heard the broadcast.
I never saw a picture of Bryce before I went there and had no idea what to expect. Arriving at the Park I pulled up in the first car park and walked through a narrow stip of forest and came out in Fairyland. What a magical place! The late afternoon sunshine made the spires, pinnacles and towers glow with a golden orange. The shapes and stacks of layer upon layer of rocks and boulders just inspired awe and wonder at the natural beauty of the place.
Number 1 on my list of places that I must see again.

J.W. Humphrey promoted the scenic wonders of Bryce Canyon’s amphitheaters, and by 1918 nationally distributed articles also helped to spark interest. However, poor access to the remote area and the lack of accommodations kept visitation to a bare minimum.

The canyon area was settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1850s and was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who homesteaded in the area in 1875. The area around Bryce Canyon became a United States national monument in 1924 and was designated as a national park in 1928. The park covers 56 mi² (145 km²). The park receives relatively few visitors compared to Zion Canyon and the Grand Canyon, largely due to its remote location. The town of Kanab, Utah is situated at a central point between these three parks.
