Seward

Worth visiting!

The best place to sea wildlife.

After cruising up from Seattle, through the Inside Passage and up to Kodiak, I definitely recommend going to Seward to see wildlife. I went on other formal excursions and the one organized by Kenai Fjords Tours, in Seward was by far the best. We saw about 30 killer whales (some of which came up close to investigate the boat, many of whom were young and jumping out of the water), 4 or 5 humpbacks (generally mother and child) which also came close, a group of Dall’s Porpoise which were bow riding for about 10 minutes, both types of puffins, a colony of about 40 sea lions, a handful of seals, a LOT of common murre and of course several glaciers. I highly recommend the company!

Bar

Besides taking the great sight-seeing boat trip from Seward to Exit Glacier, three co-workers and I stayed up until 2:00 AM (that’s 5:00 AM CST my normal time) having beers at a bar and listening to bad karaoke. Good times!

A tip I have about this place

Also, take a fjords cruise through Resurrection Bay. The last time I went I saw some whales, seals, dall sheep, etc… Fantastic! If you get sea-sick, take some ginger pills.

A tip I have about this place

There’s a restaurant right on the water called Ray’s Waterfront Seafood. Eat there! Everything’s excellent, even the clam chowder. Clam chowder and an Alaskan amber on any day is a beautiful thing!

Why I recommend this place to visitors

I really love the atmosphere…not too busy but doesn’t feel so remote. there is a lot to do around Seward. I really like Exit Glacier, hiking Mt. Marathon, and taking the Fox Island Cruise-I saw humpback and orcas, Ailik Glacier and some beautiful scenery along the way. I recomend the sea life center-it is a great way to see the wildlife up close.

"Beach" camping?!

More like parking lot camping. Maybe my expectations were too high. Maybe I shouldn’t read misleading brochures before I visit. Sigh.

I really thought Seward would be much less crowded than it was. I didn’t think that the campgrounds would have as little space between you and the next campers. I didn’t think the cabin on the cliff was in the middle of the town. There is a lot to do in Seward, and it’s probably a great place when it has less people (not during the summer). And maybe I’m spoiled from having access to so many uncrowded beaches in Massachusetts, where I’m from. Whatever the reason, I’m certainly not visiting Seward again soon.

Seward is absolutely my favorite town in Alaska.
It’s a short drive from home (only a few hours on the Seward Highway) and a very beautiful drive.

Seward offers everything. There is camping, boating, fishing and hiking. You can drive to Exit glacier and hike up to it, or you can catch a Fjord tour. Or you could spend hours in the Sealife center learning about the sea creatures of Alaska.

The town is tiny, but feels like home. There are also a few great restraunts to try out.
