I grew up in Denver, Colorado. I came to Iowa City for school, met a transplanted Chicago girl, got married and have lived here for eleven years (including college) and I’m not sure I’ll ever move. Iowa City boasts many of the things that make the midwest great—no traffic, clean air, nice people, great produce and generally inexpensive prices. Iowa City is also home to the University of Iowa which draws theatre, musicals, concerts, lectures and book readings. This combination of midwestern charm and cultural awareness makes Iowa City a wonderful place to live, no matter your background.
If you are coming to visit Iowa City, come in the fall. Summers are hot and sticky, winters are brutally cold and spring is just damp. But the falls are when Iowa really shines. The trees are changing, the mornings are crisp and cool and six Saturdays a year Kinnick Stadium becomes the fifth largest city in Iowa. Iowa City is worth visiting but be careful, don’t stay too long. You may never leave.

I love Iowa City! It’s the best place to raise children and start a family. The seasons are actual seasons and the place is great. Alot of college students and kids with dreams. A nice river and the University of Iowa. Art is a big thing here and the restaurants are excellent.

I tried college at University of Iowa for a few months. College didn’t suit me, so I went home to Illinois, but I missed Iowa City afterwards.
I’m not sure what it is about it that makes me like it so much…it does have a nice downtown with a lot going on (it’s a College town). And the houses are fabulous. And I like the hills; I grew up in Illinois so I’m used to flat, flat, flatness everywhere and the hills of Iowa were cool and gave it a nice feel.
Iowa City is a town I wouldn’t mind living in for a long period of time if I had a nice job. It has lots of trees, some parks and bike trails, the Iowa River.

It’s like a Southern town in the summer, with long days dripping with sun and honysuckle.

I did not really expect much from Iowa City. The name itself seemed to speak of a singular lack of imagination. Yet, two weeks after I visited it in 1989, I had fallen in love with it. I visited it again in 1995, and found that my initial impressions of it were not that far off the mark. The writing program is simply to die for.

I was actually quite surprised by this city. The downtown is really pretty and seems to be culturally alive.

Really fine college town with a prestigious writing program, great steaks, serious winters. And how ‘bout them Hawkeyes?
