Osteria La Spiga aka: La Spiga

I went once to the old location and last night we went to the new location. Saturday night – packed. 40 minute wait list. All the hosts seemed dazed and overwhelmed. They handled it well..
ANYway, I asked the waitress for suggestions the whole way. Liked the salad with rabbit, etc…
The reason I am writing this is because though overall it was a special, expensive, fairly fun experience, I was totally insulted by the asparagus wrapped in prosciutto. I didn’t see how much it was and let the waitress suggest it – it was 3 (THREE!!!) stalks of asparagus wrapped in prosciutto. I think it was at least $6 or maybe $8. Seriously, it tainted my entire impression because I’ve always found the portions really small and I don’t know how the pictures on this post manage to make it look more substantial for the prices but really, the asparagus was the last straw.
I only say “worth visiting” because everyone should experience the atmosphere and the tiramisu, but don’t go if you’re hungry.

I really loved atmosphere of the old space. The new loaction isn’t bad, just very different from the small intimate feel of the original. And to still call it an “osteria” is a stretch.

The food is still quite good, though.

I went here for a first date (at the previous location) and ended up with great food and a bf.

Osteria La Spiga left their Broadway QFC location, and have just reopened a couple of blocks away, on 12th. I haven’t been in yet, but the new space looks fantastic…

My tomato allergy means that I haven’t been to a lot of Italian restaurants in the city, because trying to find something on the menu I can eat is a depressing exercise. I’d rather just go have sushi: safe, non-murderous sushi. Yesterday I went to La Spiga for the first time, and it was delicious.

We had the prosciutto appetizer, which is just a bunch of thin slices of meat on a board. I think I could live on prosciutto and bread and olives maybe. For dinner I tried a pasta in a white cream and truffle butter sauce and it was heavenly. My companion had some kind of pasta with rosemary and braised rabbit, which was also delicious, although I don’t think I could eat a whole plate of bunny without getting sad—it violates my “cute-atarian” diet (I don’t eat anything cute).

Oh so anyway my point was that this is a good Italian place to go if you can’t eat tomatoes because they had lots of other options, and it is also good if you CAN eat tomatoes.

This is what it tastes like. No other “italian” place comes even close.

They make passatelli just like my grandmother (who used to live in Faenza, Emilia-Romagna) made them.

Just returned from an amazing meal at La Spiga. Wow! The gnocchi was awesome. It melted like butter in my mouth. I also tried the ravioli and the pesto which were equally delicious. Everything just seemed so fresh and well made. The atmosphere was casual and jovial and made for a great family get-together.

We had some excellent wine, too, a Sangiovese from the Emilia-Romagna region. And we all had desert. I chose the mascarpone, which is a totally decadant tiramisu thing.

Osteria La Spiga is now high on my list of favorite restaurants. A return engagement is a must.
