At least to the Sun Magazine or maybe it was the UTNE READER? Anyway, this city is busting at the seams, literally, with everything from million dollar lofts to affordable comedy houses. I remember when we called it Royal Joke. No more!!!! Basically, an expressway (696) opened up this sleepy little midwest town to more than just the surrounding suburbs! We are as cosmopolitan as any East/West coast city. There seems to be a pretty diverse crowd here although with all the new real estate and remodeling I fear that diversity will soon be limited to a specific income bracket.
To see what Royal Oak was, say 20 years ago, you may want to visit the city just across the expressway. Like Royal Oak, Ferndale has re-imaged itself but with less intensity than RO. This is most likely due to the fact that it is a buffer zone city between Detroit to its south and Royal Oak to its north. not to mention, Ferndale simply never had the ‘cool’ arts and crafts neighborhoods in the quanity that Royal Oak did. Nevertheless both are great cities!!!!!! If you have not been, I highly recommend visiting.
