Zanzibar Islands aka: Spice Islands, Zanzibar Archipelago

This is a gem of a place, the old Stone Town with its small alleyways full of shops – then the wonderfully secluded beaches and plantations growing every spice under the sun. Spend a couple of days exploring the town (including learning about the history of slave trading), then spend a few more at one of the beach resorts. The place is developing, get there while it’s largely unspoilt.

Great location once u have fought ur way passed the taxi touts at the entry ‘port’.
Stone Twon is great with highly colourful markets and shops. The coast of the island is just like the pics. lodged elswhere. Good simple accom. if you want it is available on the coasts AWAY from Stone Town -good bus system – a good range of meals from DikDik to Parrot Fish.
Try Prison Island for a short sea trip to an unspoiled Island…fabulous swimming on the reef and hugh tortoises in the gardens of a ‘resturaunt’ – Prison Island was as it sounds a prison – but for slaves en-route to America etc.

one of my most favorite places on the entire planet. Very very special.

Zanzibar is far from everything else, it’s off the coast of Tanzania but it’s a world in intself, beautiful. A true kaleidoscope of cultures that has evolved to create a magical place.

It’s a paradisiac place

I never visited the touristy areas. I had an advantage (I’m black) and I had been in Mwnasa for a month so I picked up some Swahili. Approached a taxi driver about my age and rented him out for the day. Food, and about 30 USD.

I’ve never been in a place I felt so at peace. Perhaps it was from the work in Mwansa, the safari on the Serengeti, or just my imagination.

So worth visiting, even for a day.

Beautiful, walk around the town, on the beach, talk to the fishermen, they are so kind.

I spent 3 days of a two-week tanzania trip on Zanzibar and thought it was amazing. It has its touristy elements, especially at the beach resorts, but Stone Town is an incredible mash-up of a medieval medina and modern africa, with both its history and its modern political dissent on display. It was also one of the places where i felt the least insulation from the culture of the people who live there. Go go go.

I would recommend Zanzibar if you don’t mind being a tourist and want a lovely coast to hang out on with lots of history
