A tip I have about this place

A disapointing one-day-trip…
When my familiy and I got off the ferry from Tarifa (Spain), a man went straight at us and offered us to be our guide for 35 Euros. Since we didnt know where to go from where the ferry left us, we agreed. He took us to a taxi and drove us to a kind of warehouse in the city. There he took us to a room where some people showed us some very fine carpets they would have us to buy. We tried to tell our guide that we really didnt want any carpets, but he wouldnt listen. The Marrocan carpetsalesman was kind, but we got a very strong feeling, that if we didnt buy anything, it would take a very long time to get out of the warehouse. So we did buy a carpet!
Our guide then took us to another store where we could buy jewelry. And once again we had to use euros on things we really didnt want. After 3 more similar stops, our guide left us. We then tried to walk in the city on our own, but we very soon got “run down” by eagerly street salesmen. Our trip to Tanger ended with a two-hour wait for the ferry at the ferry terminal.
We didnt get to see much of the city and we very much felt that the socalled guide sort of hijacked us. When we tried to tell him that we wanted to see the city and not to shop, he told us that there were nothing else to see! I never thought I should hear someting like that from a guide!

A tip I have about this place

Folks are friendly albeit a bit pushy. Too many sites worth visiting to list. Be sure you walk around and not drive. A local guide is worth the money, even though you know you’re getting ripped off. COnsider it as supporting local flavour.

culture shock

Enjoyed the marketplace, but was really glad to head back to Spain the next day on the ferry. It was quite the culture shock for me and my travelmates.

I had a bad experience...

My friend and I made a poor decision to do a day trip to Tanger from Gibraltar. Since we were in a hurry, we agreed to be led around by a man who claimed he was an “official guide” from the tourism bureau, and who, long story short, royally ripped us off. I suppose we should’ve seen it coming. Live and learn, as they say.
Anyway, Tanger was pretty interesting, but I don’t think I’ll be going back.

Easy trip

This is an easy trip from Spain. We didn’t get a chance to get into the rest of the country but this will give you a good taste of Morocco and a major culture shock!

Be prepared for a lot of street harassment if you’re white and don’t hire somebody as a guide. Hiring somebody as a guide might not be such a great idea, either.

I think it's "Tangier" but maybe that's just me.

Quite a sketchy place at night, and if you’ve never been anywhere in Africa before, the culture shock can be substancial.
Beware the con artists, and wandering about after dark is probably a bad idea.

we had a wonderful dinner at Medina

Me and my wife Eliana have been to Tanger and just loved the Medina where we had a wonderful dinner one of the nights. Then at 5 o´clock in the morning we could hear from the streets the voice of a man echoing with this misterious song. Later we were told he was praying out loud. Magic! The market at downtown Medina is incredible.

Find the tea shop/cafe clinging to the cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean, north-west of the Medina. They have a parcheesi set.
