Canberra

Worth visiting!

Born and bred.

I’m Canberra born and bred, I think canberra is one of those places that is good fun to visit, worth it for the tourists, but boring as hell for the locals.

How this place changed my life

it’s my home…i was born on the lake and spent the first 10 years of my life here… i always found it boring, my dad was involved in the political/journalism lifestyle and i was dragged around in it at an early age, I met ambassadors from all over, pretty famous footy players and a bunch of other characters…as a kid that doesnt seem very exciting, but when we’d go to the italian embassy i’d learn how to make pizza with the ladies in the kitchen, and when i’d fly to sydney to visit my mum, i’d often chat with people my dad knew on the plane.

I’ve lived in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Tasmania…but Canberra will always be my home, its where I always end up coming back to.

Canberra can be an exciting place – if you’re visiting and you like the nightlife of sydney – than you wont find it here, if you’re into culture than you will find it here.

Canberra’s nightlife isn’t non existent, its just smaller, and quieter. You have to know where to go and with who.

The culture is what makes it stand out, it may not be a huge city like our two neighbours melbourne and sydney, but its has an eclectic feel where its mixed with the political works and the cultural side, along with university students, and the kids running around questacon.

its got skyfire, and floriade, queens birthday fireworks weekend, and the only gay bar cube where there tend to be more hetero’s, its got the UCBAR on thursday nights, The lighthouse hits home on wednesday into thurs mornings, its got sketchycrew.com weekly gig updates, it has the beach and snow within 2 hours drive, it’s canberra…

its will always have my heart, and will always be my home. No matter where I am.

Not worth visiting!

A review of this place: Maybe I'm missing something...

... but after Sydney and the Blue Mountains I found Canberra a bit of a let-down as the last place I visited on my brief Australian trip.

The Parliament Buildings and the National Museum are fine, but I felt the city just didn’t have much of an atmosphere compared to its bigger neighbour.

I really got the impression that it’s a city of politicians, diplomats, lawyers and businessmen – I was there at the weekend and the place was dead.

A different pace

I live on a ranch outside the city, very medieval. I loved it everything I do today is to get me the opportunity to live that lifestyle again. A simple life with simple pleasures.

The last time I went to this place

We drove from Sydney all the way to Canberra and we visited Floriade Carnivale with tons of flowers but it got a bit boringg after a while. The next day we went to Questacon which is a science centre and all the kids love it a lot.

The restaurant with the grand piano

I love piano’s, and piano music. So when I found an asian restaurant with a pianola style grand piano playing classical msic. I decided to stay there for lunch. Close to the bus depot, and reasonably priced. I was suitably impressed. Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the restaurant.

The last time I went to this place

We went for a day trip from Sydney and there was a crazy thunderstorm with torrential rain and hail that caused the roof in the National Museum of Australia to cave in … while we were there!

Needless to say I will ALWAYS remember this trip to Canberra! :)
