Home Away From Home

I was born in La Porte, which is basically another part of South Bend with another name. I still have a lot of family in the area so we usually visit every so often. One of Oprah Winfrey’s homes is nearby, much to the delight of my mother. Near her home there’s also a great little apple orchard with awesome green apples.

A review of this place: i lived in south bend

maybe this is a ok place to visit but if you have the money to travel, why would you go to South bend if you can go to any other place. i lived there for 7 years. there isn’t a whole lot to do. you can go to the movies, out to eat or shop, that’s about it. and then there is corn, and more corn. only good thing about it is that South bend is close to Chicago.

A review of this place

I’ve lived here almost 9 years. Its not as exciting as Chicago but its not as boring as people say. One nickname for this city is “East of Chicago”. I think its because its close enough to Chicago and the general feel of this town is like that of a Chicago suburb. Only, we have Notre Dame. And Notre Dame is like the heart of this city. It seems to bring our community together because so many of us share such passion for the Fighting Irish. Its contagious. Its in the air. Thats part of the charm of South Bend.

How this place changed my life

I grew up here. Yep, my hometown is unfortunately the boring old city of South Bend, IN. So that makes me a Hoosier. Ew. Even being a Hoosier, I don’t know what that means. Plus now I resent Notre Dame. My mother and I lived right down the street.

Fischoff

I was in South Bend for the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, which was held at IU South Bend that year. It was fun, but we didn’t see much because we were in performances most of the time.

Where I grew up

From the ages of 7 to 17, South Bend was my home. I lived just a short walk from St. Mary’s Woods and the St. Joseph River. To earn money as a teen, I shoveled snow in the winter, mowed lawns in the summer, raked leaves in the fall, and caddied on the golf course at Notre Dame. The seasons in northern Indiana are a delight, and the occasional tornadoes that pass through always skip over South Bend because it’s in a valley. Lots of history in the area… the name of the town was bestowed by the Lewis & Clark expedition as they camped on the banks of the south bend of the river. Studebaker built its cars at a plant there. I would love to go back for a high school reunion someday. South Bend Central was eliminated in the 1970’s, but we alums still “Keep the Faith.”
