I personally dig New Haven. It’s extremely pedestrian-friendly.

in a motel in New Haven for two nights. When I got there, it was obvious that there were several families living in the motel. It was a class-A dump. The downtown was a dump. The suburbs were bland. And the only possible saving grace, Yale University, was underwhelming to say the least. Unless you can get into Yale, don’t go…

Maybe it’s because I was born and raised here, but it is definitely not the place for me. It can be fun if you don’t end up passing through downtown everyday of your life. It would be a nice place to visit only if you live in Connecticut and are looking for a daytrip or if you live in one of the neighboring states. Otherwise, do not waste your time and money on New Haven, CT!
I have been to Yale University many times. My father was pushing me to go there and study medicine against my interest since I was about eight years old. Twelve years later, he’s still pushing for it. Yale has a nice library….your jaw would drop if you are an avid reader like myself. Other than that it’s just another ivy league college with a bunch of prep school kids running around.
The green, which rests in the very center of downtown…is just that…a green. It’s a green like every other city has. It’s kind of big and a lot of homeless people sleep there and feed pigeons. It’s almost exactly like Denver’s green…though less active.
Union Station is only worth visiting if you’re hopping a train or a greyhound. East Rock is boring…there’s not much there. It is just a large residental area with a few schools. Mamoun’s Falafel made Will (an old friend of mine) and I sick…and I don’t really wish to talk about that experience. SCSU is your standard state college. I know lot of people who I grew up with and/or went to high school with attend SCSU. They say it’s like this big reunion (an unwelcome reunion for several).

small college city (Yale, UNH, Albertus, etc) but very very vibrant – close to NYC, Newport Rhode Island, The hamptons, Martha’s Vineyard, Maine, Philly etc..great pubs, bars, restaurants & clubs…....not bad for a small town….

I was born at Yale New Haven hospital, but we moved away when I was young. My mom was born and mostly raised in New Haven. I’ve heard a lot of bad stories about that city from when she was growing up, or from other people in my family. Luckily, I haven’t encountered too much bad there, but I know there are more and more “bad” parts of the city. Basically, I’m sure there’s some good to New Haven, Yale is definately amazing, and there are lots of cultural events and concerts that are fun to go to; but be careful where you go and definately don’t go anywhere alone!

I moved from the South to New Haven with my girlfriend so she could get her PhD from Yale. I love it. The city life is great, the city itself is lovely, and the residents are among the least unfriendly Connecticuters I’ve encountered. Don’t get me wrong, they still live in CT, but they’re nicer than your average Connecticutian. And the patently ridiculous Yale architecture is to die for.
