Lansing
Worth visiting!
Another state capital
When traveling through the US, making it a point to visit every single state capital along the way is something that some people used to do but has since gone out of vogue.
Lansing has an interesting history. It used to be a swamp, but the goverment decided that the state capital should be centrally located to the state, and so moved the capital from where it was (Detroit, if I remember correctly) to Lansing, many many many years ago (100? something like that – long time ago), and in the process, did lots of landscaping to ensure that it be usable and not just office buildings in the middle of a swamp. That much said, if you like swampy areas, you can still find them in Lansing, along with a decent number of mosquitos during the summer, as they like swamps too.
If you’re going to any of the surrounding areas (East Lansing, Okemos, Holt, Dewitt, Mason, St. John’s, Owosso, and probably more) by air, you’ll be landing at the Lansing airport and then traveling on land from there. Perhaps the smallest of state capital airports that I’ve seen, it is functional, safe, and clean enough to not make you feel icky.
Lansing is worth visiting as an example of yet another state capital, along with the state history museum, and nearby attractions (Michigan State University campus), but doesn’t have special landmarks/sites beyond that (no giant towers, archs, famous statues, etc…). Aparently “Elderly Instruments” in Okemos has quite the bit of fame, but I’ve not chanced my way there yet.
