Overland Park

I grew up here and it’s not that great. Although my time away made me appreciate Kansas City, I still don’t like the people in Overland Park. I understand why people think it’s a great place to raise a family, and I do think I was lucky to grow up in the Kansas City area, but the people are obsessed with status symbols and there are obvious problems with racism that white people in the area refuse to admit exist.

While the area is set up nicely (attractive buildings with lots of grass/trees/fountains/etc) due to a beautification act, it really is just an upper-middle class suburbia. You need a car to get anywhere; as with most perceptions of Kansas, it sprawls. The problem is mostly the people; I find a lot of them to be unfriendly and not open to different ways of living.

My sister was born at Shawnee Mission Hospital in 81 and we moved away in 82 but I enjoyed my time there. Great place to grow up.

I grew up in Overland Park having moved there when I was 2 and living there until I went to college.

It’s more or less a generic, upper-middle class suburb much like almost every single other one there is. I wouldn’t call it a good place to raise a kid unless you want them to leave because unless you’re the kind of person looking for “a good place to raise kids” there really isn’t any worthwhile reason to live there. Raise your children someplace interesting. Personally I have no desire to ever return there and if my parents and some of my friends did not live there I never would.

Its one of those thing, a suburb. A nice one, outside of KC.

My brother moved out here, very nice place … must say! It was easy to drive around, the roads follow a grid pattern!

if I didn’t have relatives living in and around Johnson County, I don’t think I’d choose to spend time here. It’s probably an all right place to live, but it doesn’t offer much for the visitor.
