Omaha

I lived in Omaha my entire life until 18. Though it’s not my favorite city in the world, there’s no denying the uniqueness and beauty of certain parts of the city. The Old Market, the Zoo and the Joslyn are my personal favorites (bareing in mind I was underage the entire time I lived there).

I took a bus out to San Francisco from East Lansing, MI. I spent about two hours in the Omaha bus station.
How does ToddieM manage to live such an interesting life?

My Dad lives here and I visited for a weekend in April. Of course we picked the one night that I think EVERY high school Omaha has Prom to go hang out downtown. I really love the old factory feel of this whole city. Believe it or not, it’s a big change from Texas.

I lived in Lincoln, an hour from Omaha, for 5 years. Omaha’s actually not a bad little city. I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit it, but if you do happen to be in the area, there are some nice things to do.

i was born and raised in bellevue, and there is literally no empty space between bellevue and omaha, so we were there a lot. i remember the train station museum, the park with the steel slides, the antiquarium book store, henry doorly zoo, the sokol auditorium, when con agra tore down all those buildings to build this park.

one day, my brother and i were riding with our mother to buy some furnishing from someone who lived downtown and she locked her keys in the car. a roving band of punk rockers came up, produced tools, unlocked the car door and left us with the sage advice “remember ma’am, not all teenagers are bad”. then again, some other drunken teenagers stole our car out of our driveway, smashed our christmas presents up and abandoned it on the freeway in west omaha.

there was an arbor day parade with solar cars in that con agra park, and i got lost in downtown omaha on my bike. old memory.

i went back while visiting an ailing grandparent in iowa, but only drove through. couldn’t find saddle creek records!

I live in Omaha (when I’m not in college at BVU), and I miss it. Sure, it’s still kind of boring compared to some cities. But it’s not like the small towns here in Iowa.

Besides the riverwalk, and clean air… this place is for those looking for a place to hide. Not much to do between the corn fields. I went to Omaha numerous times over a year to visit someone I was dating. They took a turn out of this city after only a year of living there. There isn’t a thing to do.

Its got an amazing zoo, good local music scene, lots of shopping and restraunts. The college world seriesare here as well as the botanical gardens. There is also the western heritage musuem and the joslyn art musuem. Our humane society is very nice!

Leave your “Bigger metropolis” snobbery at the door. Omaha has a LOT of great aspects. What I remember best from 25 years ago is the Smoke Pit BBQ and the Surfside. Oh, and that school where I got my degree. The the people there have a genuineness and a sensibility lacking in my adopted home. People in Omaha realise that if you are taking your pet to a psychic, YOU should be taken to a psychiatrist. Lotta good times, but if I ever see 12” snow drifts again it will be WAY too soon.

Ended up here because of love. Love kicked me in the ass and left me alone. But Omaha gave me friends and a great growing professional opportunities. Look who’s laughing now. I won’t stay here forever, I belong to a bigger city. But Omaha has been good to me. It has earned a little space in my heart
