I've never been lost so many times in my life!

But I like it coz my cousin lives here and the people seemed really friendly, even when we hit their car, oops!

Why I want to go to this place

If the whole study abroad thing works out for me, this is where I’ll be going. I’ll know in a couple of weeks if the university is willing to take me next spring. Cross your fingers!

Born and raised

Holy hell, the only good thing about this hell hole is the shop Voodoo. And the new shop Haze that ahs just opened. Oh, also the club The Charlotte [They have awesome gigs there] This place is full of chavs and lowlifes. I can’t wait to get out of here.

My home town

I’m currently at uni in Lancaster and I love coming home to Leicester for holidays. Lancaster, unfortunately has turned out not to be anywhere near as exciting as Leicester, which is actually a pretty decent place.

There’s a busy town centre with all sorts of diverse and mainstream shops (we have a good Topshop and HMV as well as a large selection of great independent stores – VooDoo, Very Bizarre, The Wardrobe, Magic Toast, Rockaboom etc) and the nightlife is great. If you’re into dance/pop music there’s LIFE, Creation and Zanzibar, if you like R&B there’s PoNaNa, if you’re a rock/indie fan there’s MOSH and FanClub. For hardcore clubbers there’s the gay bar Havana which is open till 5am (and isn’t exclusive to the gay community so anyone can go). There’s also a bunch of other smaller, but still great clubs and bars to visit including the DMU student union club, Toothpaste. We’ve also got a pretty lively music scene, with The Charlotte frontiering a lot of great (and new!) rock and indie bands (Babyshambles, Nine Black Alps, Hard Fi, Mystery Jets, The Departure, Editors…the list goes on) as well as SUMO, Firefly, The Attik and The Shed. For bigger acts there’s DeMontfort Hall (Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party), which is also a nice place.

If you avoid the inevitable chavs that seem to pollute every city (so stay away from McDonalds next to the Shires shopping centre) then everyone is pretty friendly although you also get the arrogant types, that again, come with most big cities. Can’t really fault Leics. too much apart from there’s not much for little kids or families to do and unless you get right out of the city centre, there’s not much in the way of scenery either (fields, sheep, that kind of thing). And like a lot of places in England, the weather’s pretty drab. However, if you’re a student or just a young person looking for work, then I’d definitely recommend Leicester.

Leicester - one of the few cities in England that are OK to live in.

Unpretentious, multi-cultural, tolerant, and diverse – a great place to raise kids. We have loads of great bars (heads up to the West End in particular), and the best Indian sweet shops and restaurants in the UK. In the summer there are loads really good festivals and events. We have a good art-house hang out (The Phoenix) and reasonable shopping. It takes an hour and 15 minutes to get to London on the train.
We have a few museums, but the City Gallery is too small and doesn’t catch many interesting exhibitions. The city is investing in a multi-million pound cultural quarter so hopefully in terms of the cutting edge things will improve.
