I’m going to be in Birmingham this February. A group of us from Mount Allison University are heading there to do some work with Habitat for Humanity. It’ll be an incredibly long drive but I know it’ll be worth it. I went to Dade City, FL 3 years ago with Habitat and had an incredible time!

There is lots to see and learn and understand here. Some areas need to come forward to this century and stop living in past beliefs and ignorances.

Was in 1998 – this is a “sleeper,” a far nicer place than its reputation (circa 1965) would have you believe. Try a restaurant in Five Points, head up the hill and see the Vulcan. Pick up a “Black & White,” the Birmingham City Paper to see what’s happening, who’s playing in town.
Drinks at the Blue Monkey martini lounge – hope its still there!
Fathers Day weekend (used to be) plan on attending City Stages, the biggest & best music festival this side of the old New Orleans Jazz Festival – seperate stages for Rock, Alternative, Jazz, Funk, Country… you name it. Big names to local acts… a great festival indeed.

Birmingham is a nice city, it’s not as big as Atlanta.. and is very much suburban. I’ve lived here for almost 8/9 (?) years now, and even though I don’t want to stay here the rest of my life, it is very pleasant here. Generally speaking, it is not as “hickish” as many would like to assume.. the standard of living.. or rather should I say the price is actually quite affordable in comparision with many cities in the U.S.

This is the first place I ever really “Chose” to live, rather than being sent there through circumstances. I Love it. The feeling of being on my own in a “big city” that was so small town friendly made me very happy. I loved this city so much and was devastated when i had to leave it. The Nick is a great place. So much fun. And the active tribal style bellydance scene is amazing.

armpit of the world! Crime, poverty and badly run city gov. If it were not for UAB, the place would dry up. But, you have very nice, wealthy Mountain Brook right next door. An isolated, restricted area where people make money in Birmingham, but go home to Mt. Brook or Shelby Co.

Birmingham is definitely worth visiting. It has a rich heritage. Some of the things worth visiting here is the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Museum, the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church (where the 4 little girls were bombed during the Civil Rights Movement), and thousands of other spectacular and historical sites.
